BEHAVIORAL
CHANGE STRATEGY
Many
organisations recognise environmental/health situations are deteriorating:
•
20 - 30% of the community smoke billions of cigarettes each year.
• What is dropped in the street ends up in our waterways
and on our beaches.
• The butts and the contents of the filters pollute our
waterways for up to 14 years.
• Rural Fire Services have noted 1200 fires were reportedly
started by a discarded cigarette butts in a year.
Changes
in legislation restricting the location of smoking out doors are
building up butt litter toxic pollution of our waterways through
rain water runoff. This is an environmental / health impact on
100% of the community. The solution to this situation raises the
issue of facilitating behavioral change in 20-30% of the community.
A
No Butts Policy and the introduction of penalties for smokers
are a justifiable approach for large cities with daily transient
worker populations. However a suburban Council is unlikely to
be able to fine 20-30 % of its residents. There should be a change
process.
